Synopsis for Users: Version 5.0 corrected a problem introduced in version 4.0 in the ConductionFiniteDifference heat transfer model. Previously the model was invalid unless layer materials were homogenous.
I have turned this over to the helpdesk where our validation people are also running studies to quantify the expected differences between using CondFD (Conduction Finite Difference) and CTF.
We've also just had (in this release cycle) a couple more CRs (aka Change Request) done for this aspect of EnergyPlus.
