When you download EnergyPlus one of the files that comes with the program is called "EnergyPlus Documentation Main Menu".  If you go into that and click on the "Getting Started" link in the upper left, there is some overview and some tutorials on how to use EnergyPlus without any graphical interface.  I am assuming whatever interface you download will come with its own tutorials, but I haven't gotten that far yet.
