RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] Graphical interface

EP is an advanced research tool.

Most graphic interface appears to be easy to use with a simple building design.  If the number of zones is large, it may not be that easy to control and debug, as some of the group user are experiencing.

A cube has six coordinate values, entered in a combaination of sequences.  If you use the EP MACRO editor, after the code for the first zone is done, the second zone involves the change of these six numbers and a few names.  After that, you only need to change the faces which are in contact with each other, by cut and paste.

There are special code to enter retangular doors, windows to the walls.

The roof may need some effort to design a special MACRO.

As you proceed, more and more of these MACRO's are accumulated for your own use.  Most IDF for one project can be specified in one or two pages of MACRO's, using a few  include files, such as, location and run control, material, construction, building surfaces and zones, sizing, system, plant, schedules, output variable and reports.

Building surfaces and zones are the only part that is unique to a building.  All the others can be done with cut and paste from the example files.

I wonder how many of you are creating the IDF in this way.

Subject: [EnergyPlus_Support] Graphical interface

Fellows,

I am a senior grad. student researching sustainability and intending to use Energy Plus. for interface part, I couldn't buy Design Builder because it was so expensive, so I downloaded EP-Quick which was free. It seems the capabilities of EP are very limited even more than eQUEST. Do you guys have any previous experience with EP? or Do you know how to get the most out of it?

Thanks,
