That approach for reporting air temperature happens to be one of the examples for the Energy Management System feature. See the example file called EMSCustomOutputVariable.idf for a way to get this output directly from EnergyPlus.

DesignBuilder calculates the average building air temperature using a volume-weighted average of the temperatures in all the zones in the simulation.
