Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] Limitations in Number of Zones?

Vladimir

I use the zone multiplier to reduce my model's zone number and speed up simulation. There are some assumptions I made:
1) the zone you are trying to reduce must have ver similiar thermal behavior or identical.
2) you may try adabatic construction to eliminate warnings on construction surface are mismatch
3) multiplier coulbe tricky if you are using dimming lighting control

for a multi-storey building. I would model floor 1, 2 and top floor (say floor 20) and multiple zones in floor2 assuming floor 2~19 are thermally similiar.

thanks

Hi Vladimir,

I modeled about 500 zones separetely. I didn't use the multiplier. It was a very big projet about 100000 square meters. I work on it, and every modification add a new zone. For instance it works very well Energy plus, and how I said the problem is open studio. ve

Don"t hesitate if you have questions.

Hi Oscar,

I am not sure if you missed my thank you for your information about modeling 500 zones. I also wanted to know if your 500 zones where unique or total after floor multiplier e.g. 25 zones that are same on 20 floors.

Thank you very much in advance for your time..

Vladimir.

Hi,

I modeled a project with more than 500 thermal zones. The problem its not energy plus, its open studio. To open my model in open studio it will be necessary 2 hours.....!!! So I can recommended you to simplify your model.

Dear Vladimir,

While I do not know the exact number (I think it?s a lot higher than 200), I doubt that you really want to model that many zones without a very good reason.  Keep in mind that zoning in EnergyPlus, or any modeling program, should be selected because of considerations for function and scheduling, solar exposure, and HVAC system type, not by room configuration.

Does anybody know and have the experience with the maximum number of zones(ballpark) that you can model with Energy Plus.

I did all of my energy modeling with DOE2.1E and that number in DOE2.1E is somewhere from 100 up to 200 depending on the number different system types and in general the complexity of the energy model input.

Thank you in advance,

Vladimir.
