Patrick,
DC does not have a severe winter and internal loads (lights, plug loads, etc.) may provide enough heat to maintain the space heating setpoint during occupied hours. However:
· A typical air handler heating coil will consume some heating energy to maintain the desired leaving temp setpoint. This depends heavily on your control scheme and amount of outdoor air.
· There will normally be heating energy needed during unoccupied hours, since all the lights and plug loads are turned off
Try reporting more variables to identify why no heating energy is used during a cold day at night (unoccupied period) when intuition suggests that it should use heating energy. Make Sherlock Holmes proud of you!
p.s., I normally report all of the node temps for each component of an air handler to see what?s going on at each timestep. That reveals whether your controls are doing what you intend. Another helpful variable is ?Output:Variable, ZoneName, Zone/Sys Sensible Load Predicted, Timestep;? This gives a general idea of the zone?s heating / cooling needs.
Once you identify some aspect of operation that is NOT what it should be, you can add more report variables to ?drill down? further.
