Output files are not generated at the end of the simulation, they are reported stream of consciousness. For output-heavy simulations, the hard drive speed could certainly be a factor

I think that the data of IDF and internal variables are moved to the RAM space from HDD space when you are running the EPlus simulation. So the running time will be a matter between the CPU and RAM, not HDD I think.
Of course, if you have extremely fast storage device, like SSD or RAID HDD, the generation of output files will be faster than
slow devices. However, this phase is only the last step of simulation, so it will now affect so much on the overall runtime.

Subject: [EnergyPlus_Support] Performance and Hard Drive Speed
Hi,
When running EnergyPlus on a laptop how much does hard drive speed affect execution time?
Thanks,
Karen
