I do not use much of the HVAC simulation myself.
IdealLoadsAirSystem simulation is sufficient for me working with naturally vented homes.
There are three or four groups of people using the EPlus.
1) I am in the group interested in energy saving for buildings by design. I know how to design HVAC, but would like to minimize its use to heating for Winter only. Buildings should be designd for natural ventilation in Summer, except in places where heating is needed in Summer..
2) Engineers and architects wanting to know and verify HVAC operation over the whole year period with different whether conditions in IWEC and TMY. A smaller system would save cost and energy usage. Using a certified simulation tool would also avoid the chance having legal problems and mal-practise cases.
3) Professional appraisers to generate LEED certificate for a building to receive grants and income.
4) University research students with limited funding looking for research tools to do their projects.
All your answers are good ones. The above is to expand your last one.

I'm not a specialist on the field of HVAC engineering, but very curious about the purpose of HVAC simulation by EnergyPlus.
(If anyone want to know the energy performance of "building itself" from the architect point of view, it would be suitable to run by "IdealLoadAir" system.)
Anyway, what is the purpose of HVAC simulation using EnergyPlus?
Possible answers would be,
1. to get more accurately calculated system sizes compared to RTS
2. to develop new control algorithms (night purge, setpoint reset, economizer control, etc)
3. to check validity of the applied control algorithm
4. to develop new systems
5. no special reasons, LEED requires it
6. other, please specify
Any comment would be appreciated.
