[EnergyPlus_Support] Role and Precedence of EPW Header information

Could anyone help me clarify exactly what the impact of each line of the EPW header information is. Much of it seems redundant with content in the idf or does not seem to have an impact.

running with an empty header seems to have no impact

but running a complete header with no SizingPeriod:DesignDay object fails.

Is the header just informational? if not what is the impact of all the following pieces?

LOCATION

DESIGN CONDITIONS

TYPICAL/EXTREME PERIODS

GROUND TEMPERATURES

thanks you.
