A mistake in entering of more than three vertices would most probably mean that the surface is not planar. You would most probably get a severe error in the .err file. EnergyPlus requires all surfaces to be planar as it's heat transfer algorithms, except the 3-D ones for Slab and Basement preprocessor, are one dimensional.
