Fwd: [EnergyPlus_Support] Re: How does Ideal Loads Air System function?

Actually the Ideal Loads can be set to use heat recovery and economizer but only if you specify it; It's definitely my favorite object in E+.

1. No unless you specify Ideal Air loads won't use heat recover or economizer.
2. There is no pump/fans modeled so this question is somewhat meaningless. It would be best to think of the system as being pure outdoor air supply but since there is no "cost" to recirculate air you can think of any ratio you want producing the same answer.
3. I think the exhaust node is only used for heat recovery so if your not recovering heat it is not needed.
4. The ideal air loads system is implemented as a VAV system but it is PFM (Pure F...ing Magic). It basically just adds/subtracts heat directly from the zone without considering most of the things you would typically model in E+ like the HVAC system. So unless you put in a capacity or air temperature limit into the idealAirLoads object it will essentially vary the input air temperature to meet both airflow required and temperature required.

The standard format is in the input/output manual so I didn't paste it here.

1) no economizer, no heat recovery
2) mixture...recirculates 100% - the min ODA that you specify in the objects
3) I don't think node specifications are required. This is not an Airloop as such. Think of it more as a calculation. Your sizing:zone object should contain most of the info required for the calculation. The Ideal Air system fullfills those requirements.

I've not used this object except via DesignBuilder, so I'm no expert here. Find out the nittty gritty by checking examples in your example folder. Then let me know.
