If you use one of the weather files that come with EnergyPlus or are
on the E+ web site, there is a .DDY file which is contains the design
days for that locations (if there are design data in the ASHRAE 2009
Fundamentals for that location). If you have a file that you have
created, the WeatherConverter (Weather Statistics and Converter) will
create a .DDY if you 'Convert' the file to EPW.
The run period is a day -- which day you can control within the
SizingPeriod:DesignDay object. It gives EnergyPlus information for
the peak or design day for sizing HVAC equipment and systems. For
example, page 39 of the InputOutputReference has two examples--this is
the one for cooling design:
