There is a .stat file that comes in the .zip with every weather file on the E+ web site.  The .stat file (a tab-separated file that you can open in Excel) contains statistics about the EPW.  If you don't have a .stat file, you can run the WeatherConvertor utility and have it produce one.
 
Here's an example of the hottest and coldest days from one of the files:
 
   - Maximum Dry Bulb temperature of  42.0°C on May 20
   - Minimum Dry Bulb temperature of  -0.7°C on Dec 26
 
Lots of other useful statistics in the .stat.
