You can open any IDF in openstudio and edit the building geometry though you may loose some input parameter if not supported by current version of  openstudio (I found this problem up to  version 0.7). You can keep master IDF as backup and after editing your IDF in openstudio, export the new IDF and just copy building surface and paste in the original file. Make sure building zone naming and other characteristic remains same as the original file.

I am using the DoE reference buildings idf files available at the EnergyPlus website. I want to change the area for these buildings. Is there any way these files can be uploaded to some tool with GUI and the area be changed without manually changing the available idf files.
