The software is free, however, it has a rather steep learning curve.
I would suggest downloading and installing the software (energyplus.gov)
Then follow the tutorials in the Getting Started document.
There are also many example files that show how each model performs.

The OpenStudio and Sketchup software can be used to create the buildings or more likely students would use the reference buildings found in the ...\ExampleFiles folder (Ref*.idf).

Each of these software takes time to learn and understand. This may take a semester or two to develop the teaching materials necessary to bring students up to speed quickly.
