RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] How to control Supply air temperature for heating in VAV system

If you have the size of your radiant system in correctly the program will be able to let you know if your fresh air will need to rise to such a high temperature. In the models for DOAS with radiators that I have done previously in equally cold climates as Chicago the radiant system is capable of meeting the heating needs of the building as long as the air handler is conditioning the air to ambient temperature. The advantage with this system of course is that a lot of energy is saved as you avoid a lot of reheat issues in the AHU. Regardless the simulation can calculate this for you if you program it correctly in the VAV component, the radiant component and in the equipment list and zone sizing components.

Thanks. We do have a radiant system for heating and cooling. Since the winter in chicago is pretty cold, we need to heat up the outdoor air to 31 C otherwise the radiant system might not be able to provide enough heating for the room. So I added a reheat coil on there. I checked the I/O guide, seems like the reverse control might simulate this control logic most similiarly. Thanks again.

You will need to open the input output reference guide (I/O reference guide), which is in the help menu in E+. Find your VAV component name in the contents and click on it to take you to information about the component. It will explain how you control the VAV component to make this happen.

Thanks Annie. But in a real building control system, a VAV usually have fixed supply air temperature and so that it can vary the air flow rate the meet the load right? Our company use Trace most of the time and it can fix the supply air temperature, so when compared to E+, the DOAS system seems to be off by a lot and I think the reason is becuase E+ fluctuate the supply air temperature. Is there any work around that I can do in energyplus so that I can fix the SA temperature?

In other words you should not to put a setpoint on here, just make sure your thermostats are correct for the space. for more information you can look up the VAV component in the input output reference guide. Lots of lovely information in there for you!

Correction. When I use setpointmanage:singlezone:heating to set the supply air temperature to 40 C after reheat coil, it seems it does nothing to the supply air temperature.
