In EnergyPlus, the air flow rates are set by the air terminal units.  The fan tries to respond to the air terminal requests but if they are zero then the fan will not run.

Dear Forum,

I have defined a simple system with a VAV fan serving several zones.  Throughout the year, the fan never produces flow, despite:

  • The fan schedule is ON as expected for many hours
  • Various zones have a cooling demand and unmet cooling loads
  • The discharge air setpoint for the air loop is lower than the actual temperature
  • The fan is autosized at about 11 m3/s, i.e. it's not zero.

I have not been able to determine how the fan can be scheduled "on" and produce no flow...
