I have a student who's working on converting a combination of measured and simulated data into Sankey diagrams. In fact he's conducting a survey to assess the community's reception of the approach: http://goo.gl/forms/9hqfbpEeBFt8Di3B2. Example Sankey diagrams are shown after the first page of the survey.

Also, I think Sefeira has a built-in Sankey feature, but I've never used the software.
