It's generally beyond the scope of the EnergyPlus Development
Team to validate new modules against measured data, which can
often take as much resources as the development of the modules
themselves. This is particularly challenging for natural
ventilation, since it involves the measurement of ambient
temperatures, wind speed and pressures, as well as temperatures
and air flows indoors for a multi-zone commercial building. The most extensive effort for such a validation of which I'm aware was ASHRAE project 1456-RP "Assess and implement natural and hybrid ventilation models in whole-building energy simulations", completed in early 2010 by the Univ. of Colorado. Even then, that was meant to be Phase One of a two-phase project, and compared the multi-zone modeling in EnergyPlus first against available scale model results (salt baths, etc.) and then against measurements of a building in Europe that employed hybrid ventilation. The conclusions were inconclusive - the comparisons being quite good against the simple scale model measurements, but not against the actual building measurements where the measured data themselves were found to be problematic. The project report can be purchased from ASHRAE. The work statement for Phase Two (1748-WS) was submitted to
ASHRAE Research Administration Committee (RAC) in August 2016, but
RAC has yet to announce their decision. Once RAC approves, 1748-WS
will then go out for bid. The aim of Phase Two is to identify one
or several better measured data sets of natural and/or hybrid
ventilation which would be used to validate a coupled
thermal-multi-zone air-flow building energy simulation program
(This does not have to be EnergyPlus, since there are other
programs with the same capability, i.e., TRNSYS, ESPr, etc.). Joe (I was responsible for the first implementation of a multi-zone
air-flow model into EnergyPlus back in 2002-2005; was also the
Project Monitoring Subcommittee Chair for 1456-RP and one of the
authors of 1748-WS.)
