Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] Efficiency for AC equipment in EnergyPlus

Wenliang,

At the top of every DOE prototype IDF file, there's a comment section (each line starts with '!'). It expains a bit how the model is articulated, included the type of HVAC system used. That should be helpful for you.

For eexample, here's an extract of the `RefBldgLargeHotelNew2004_Chicago.idf`

! HVAC:         2 air-cooled electric chillers, natural gas boiler, VAV in common areas, elec. unit heater in top floor corridor
!               Dedicated OA system and 4-pipe fan coil units in guest rooms
!               Economizer per 90.1-2004 for VAV system
!               Chiller part load curve corrected from original

[...]

! Zonal Equipment:                ZoneHVAC:FourPipeFanCoil, ZoneHVAC:UnitHeater (top floor corridor)
! Air Primary Loops:              VAV with Reheat, DOAS
! Plant Loops:                    SHWSys1, HeatSys1, CoolSys1
! System Equipment Autosize:      Yes
! Purchased Cooling:              None
! Purchased Heating:              None
! Coils:                          Coil:Cooling:Water, Coil:Heating:Water, Coil:Heating:Electric
! Pumps:                          Yes
! Boilers:                        Boiler:HotWater (gas-fired)
! Chillers:                       Chiller:Electric:EIR (air-cooled)

As you can see above, you might be interested in searching for Chiller:Electric:EIR. You'll find two: CoolSys1 Chiller 1 and CoolSys1 Chiller 2, both with have a cooling cop of 5.5

  Chiller:Electric:EIR,
    CoolSys1 Chiller 2,      !- Name
    AUTOSIZE,                !- Reference Capacity {W}
    5.5,                     !- Reference COP {W/W}
    [...]

Best,
Julien

I got the reference model (large hotel) from DOE website, they do have COP there, but no value, it looks like this building is using other HVAC system instead of DX Coil or Chiller you mentioned.

best,
Wenliang

What files do not show a COP? (since both of the screen captures you included have COP)

Hi, James,

For some buildings, I didn't find either Coil or Chiller for efficiency, is there some thing wrong here, I used the reference model from DOE.

William,
For a DX coil, have you seen this? (COP is a measure of efficiency)

For a Chiller, it's in the Chiller object

Hi all,

       I am just wondering how can I set up efficiency for AC equipment in EnergyPlus, I looked around almost all the parameters in EnergyPlus, I didn't find the parameter for AC efficiency.

Thanks!

William
