[Equest-users] Light Shelves

What about building an internal wall to represent the light shelf? Would this have an effect on the daylight calculation algorithm in eQUEST? It takes into account reflection off of internal walls right? Paul, if you're saying the effects of light shelves are primarily aesthetic and comfort-related, would you make any modifications in eQUEST to account for having them in the space, or is the amount of daylight eQUEST calculates essentially unaffected by the light shelf?

Mehta/Demba,
Before taking the approach of increasing "the proportion of your space that benefits from daylighting as a result of the deeper light penetration allowed by the shelves," you should use a detailed daylight simulation program to determine if any extra credit should be attributed to your chosen light shelves. Though conceptual renderings and many designers tend to suggest there is great deep daylight benefit, most daylighting experts suggest the real benefits to be the reduction in direct solar radiation striking occupants and the fact that the bounced light dispels shadows/contrast areas on the ceiling near the window, enhancing the overall ambient lighting of the space.

Paul

One possibility is to model daylighting as usual and increase the
proportion of your space that benefits from the daylighting as a result
of the deeper light penetration allowed by the shelves.

For those that are on both the BLDG-SIM and this list, I apologize for
the repost...
Question on PIU vs. VAV systems in eQuest...
If a PIU system has only SVAV boxes and all other parameters are
identical, does the PIU act like a VAV in eQuest? Only changing the
system type in my model seems to have a significant impact on energy
usage and I can't track down why that is. The difference is significant
enough that with App. G System 7 VAV w/RH, the choice between PIU and
VAV has an effect on the number of points. Any thoughts would be
appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

Matt -
You may be observing the result of the different default for
"THERMOSTAT-TYPE" for zones served by each system. The default for VAVS
is "REVERSE-ACTION" while it is "PROPORTIONAL" for PIU. Take a look in
the DOE-2 documentation for descriptions of each of these and how this
property affects ZONE terminal unit and SYSTEM operation.
