[Equest-users] Window6 eQUEST Results

Hi Otto,

I do the same as Aaron - I'll use Window6 to create my window (or glass package rather) and then edit the frame details in eQUEST to match what Window6 gives as the frame U-value

I think that the comment windows and frame are different thermodynamically is true, but I have a caveat: the U-value of the frame and glass are correlated. If you take the same frame and change the glass package then the u-value of the frame will be slightly different in each scenario - it's not a huge difference but it's not 0 either.

The one thing that I've found really strange (or frustrating?) is that the there is a "spacer type" you can select in eQUEST (Window Properties > Basic Specs) that seems to have the same options as the spacers in Window6. The problem is: when you change spacer type in Window6 you can see some pretty noticeable changes in overall window performance, but when you change that field in eQUEST I've gotten 0 change in my model (checking the LV-D for reported frame-inclusive U-value).

Cheers,
Alex

Otto -

Re: baseline strategy - what you describe used to be our strategy as well (selecting the window that was closest from the library).

However, on LEED projects, a number of reviewers took issue with that approach, and requested that our models match the u-val and SHGC of the standard exactly.

We often define baseline windows using the simplified method to match the standard.

One of the caveats with the "close as possible" library approach is that ASHRAE hasn't released specific spectral / angular performance curves for the baseline glass ...

Thanks Bruce,

I ended up selecting a window in the eQUEST library that was very similar to the results that I got from Window6.

What are others doing for creating their windows in eQUEST? Are you selecting the window from the library that is the most similar to the window that you are using? Are you importing the glass from Window6 or are you creating the window in eQUEST?

What are you using for the ASHRAE 90.1 baseline window? I typically select the window from the library that is the closest to the baseline window values.

eQuest treats the glass and the frame as separate items. They are totally different thermodynamically. There is much more to window glass than just insulation value. I normally create windows and frames inside eQuest. You could then just check with window6 to confirm your overall value. I don't believe many people are having success importing window data from other programs.

Hello everyone,

I created a window using Window6 and the results appear to be correct but when I import it into eQUEST the frame does not appear to import. The total window U-Value in eQUEST is 0.25 which makes sense if it does not include the frame but the results from Window6 shows a complete U-Value of 0.434.

Any help is appreciated.

Otto
