[Equest-users] VAV System - high cooling energy in winter

Mike,

I can’t open your file because I uninstalled 3-65, but I suggest you check the economizer low limit. A common cause I have encountered for winter cooling is due to the economizer low limit. The common default is for the economizer to shut off when the temperature drops below 45F (which is pretty ridiculous in my opinion), so the model turns on a compressor to do any cooling when it’s colder than 45F outside (which is most of the winter here in Wisconsin!). To remove the low limit, right-click on the number in the field (the red “45”) and select “Restore Default.” The field will then be blank—no low limit. Even though the text is red, it is not a user-entered value.

I have not tried using reset schedules for chilled or hot water temps because the existing building does not use reset schedules. Where can I find the loads due to OA?

Have you tried resetting chilled and hot water temperatures? Also, how much of your load is outside air?

You have the cooling control set at constant – do you know if the existing building has a sequence of operation to follow?

For a recent new building which had a VAV air handler with a chilled water coil (water delivered from an aquifer in this case, VFD drives, etc.) I used the below parameters, which appear to have a large effect on your model.

Hi,

I’m trying to model an existing building with a chilled water VAV system. The chilled water usage is much higher in the winter time than expected. Is this a common issue? Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this? My files are attached.
