Regarding discussing hvac & plumbing design software, please refer to
 
"Mechanical Engineering Design Computer Programs for Buildings" by V.C. Thomas, presented at the ASHRAE meeting in Indianapolis in 1991.  The ASHRAE document Id. No. is IN-91-7-5.  This paper refers to the IBM Architecture & Engineering Series (AES) developed here at SOM in the 1980s.
