It is still true in v 1.0.1.  We hope to replace the algorithms that deal

Same answer as #1, I think.

Probably the best answer I can give to this is to use the 
"MinimalShadowing" option rather than one of the more complete ones of 
"FullExterior" or "FullInteriorAndExterior" in the Building object.  The 
MinimalShadowing option does not calculate building self shading and other 
similar features and would be more appropriate for surfaces that are 
defined as you described.  Of course, for direct EnergyPlus input you will 
still need the 3 or 4 vertices.

We did not embody simplifications of this nature into the EnergyPlus engine 
-- we hope that people writing input interfaces would take something of 
"area" and "facing" and translate that into "proper" EnergyPlus vertices.
