Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] Using E+ for the first time

Not a rudimentary question at all.

The HVAC templates can help you get a quick initial set of objects to
describe your HVAC system, so they can save you a hugs amount of
typing. Here is a way to utilize the HVAC templates along with the
IDF Editor:

1. Using a text editor, create an imf file which describes your HVAC
system (and nothing else) using the template macro commands.

2. Run this imf file. It will not run in EnergyPlus, because your
building description is not present, but that is OK. When you try to
run it, ep-macro will create a file with the extension "epmidf".
This file is a plain idf file containing the objects created by the
HVAC templates.

3a. If you already have an idf file with your building envelope
description, use a text editor to add the contents of the epmidf file
to your main idf file. Then you can continue editing with the idf
editor. You should make a backup of your main idf file before adding
the HVAC portion in case you wish to revise your template imf file
and re-run it, so you'll have a clean file (with no HVAC) to start
over with.

3b. If you do not already have an idf file, then rename the epmidf
file to a new filename with the extension "idf" and open it in IDF
editor to add the building envelope description.

One problem you will encounter is that the current VAV system
template assumes that there will be hot water reheat coils, so you
will get some extra objects which you must delete. I would suggest
that you look at the VAV template example:

EnergyPlus\Templates\VAVSingleDuctReheatOA-TE.imf

Run this from ep-launch and look at the epmidf file which is produced
and decide if the templates will save you enough effort to be worth
learning how to use them.

If you have further questions, please ask. The templates can be
confusing.

I apologize in advance if my question may seem rudimentary, but this
is my first simulation using the Energy Plus software. I am doing my
best to make sense out of all the documentation, but I am still
unclear on a few issues.

It is probably best if I describe the system I'm trying to model, then
follow with my questions.

I am modeling a 3 story building with the following systems:
Single Duct VAV (w/ electric reheat) for each zone served by Air
Handling Units Water Cooled Chillers supply the Air Handling Units
while rejecting to Cooling Towers No boilers (or source of hot water)
are needed because of the warm climate of the location

My problem comes in getting started with the .IDF file. I have been
looking at the HVAC templates for Chillers, Cooling Towers and VAV
systems supplied with the latest version (1.0.3). I can't really seem
to make sense of this given the information in the manual.

*Should I be using the templates instead of entering the information
in manually in the IDF editor?

*Also, how do I incorporate all 3 systems since they come up as IMF
files?

Thank you in advance,
