[EnergyPlus_Support] Re: Crankcase Heater

The crankcase heater is a small heater used by some compressors to
keep the refrigerant from migrating to and condensing in the
compressor's crankcase during cold weather. Note from the
documentation (IO and Engineering docs) that this heater is modeled
to operate during the "off" cycle (when the compressor is off). Also,
the DX heating coil object has a "maximum outdoor temp for crankcase
heater operation" field which can be used to further control this
heater's operation.

You can do a web search for "compressor crankcase heaters" and find
several articles related to this subject.
