Tony,

a couple of things to note.  actually all "attached shading" surfaces 
are turned into detached internally for reasons that might not be 
obvious.  also by default, we generate more surfaces so that fins 
will shade both ways.  You can turn this off, using Diagnostics, 
DoNotMirrorDetachedShading;

You can continue to play with it or you can zip up the files and send 
them to me and/or energyplus-support@xxxxxxxx directly.  I believe 
you have my email address.
