[EnergyPlus_Support] Re: Run time error
General PC user do not have an administrator on the local drive. To
block the access to the drive, additional software is required.
VISTA has introduced an administrator right on your PC. Every file
is block to a standard user for r/w, unless it is allowed 'shared' by
the administrator which is the first user created on the PC.
I bought my PC from the shop with the VISTA pre-loaded. When I was
asked by the PC to create a user name for myself, I provided one.
Later on, I found out that this user do not have full access to my
local hard disk.
This remind me of a networked PC using a remote drive. Permission
must be granted by the administrator to write to the network disk.
This is why I suggusted in an earlier message that VISTA user should
logon as administrator to run EPlus programs.
Now, I found out that, when I make myself as an adminstrator, I am
only an inherited administrator. The rules created by the original
adminstrator are still in force. However, I can now change the rules
without going back to the first user ID.
With the ID as an inherited administrator and running EPlus as an
administor, some time I still cannot open files for writing.
When the file cannot be open for writing, the error message is 'file
not found'. This caused some confusion, because you can see the
batchfile there in the directory.
Now I found that there is another class of protection
called 'locking'.
When you copy or move a file from another directory into the
directory which is not owned by you, the file is locked, but the read-
only attribute is not set. This can also happen, when you save a
file from the e-mail.
When you see the 'file not found' and see the file in the directory,
look at its properties. You may find a message at the bottom with
an 'unlock' button. Click on the 'unlock' button the message
disappears, when you click 'apply' or 'OK', and the file is
now 'write' enabled.
When you create a new directory for a new project, you should also
make sure that you have 'full access' to the directory. If you are
an administrator, you can see all these restrictions on
the 'properties' pop up window. If you are not an administrator, you
can see the options, but cannot change it. You will have to login as
administrator to change it.
So my advice is to make sure you are at least an inherited
adminstrator user. I cannot make my ID into a full adminstrator yet.
Think in terms of a networked PC, when you see an error message.
You now have an administrator hidden in your own PC.
I installed the EPlus using my ID instead of the system ID. I am now
the 'owner user' of EPlus and therefore eleminated a lot of those
problems I saw reported in the Group mail.
It is a little long winded message. I hope this will help the VISTA
users.
