Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] New US weather data set available

Current EPW files only have precipitable water--which is NOT precipitation. We are working on a EPW2 which will include precipitation. Only two TMY-type data sets have precipitation--TMY3s and the ISHRAE (India).

A question about the new TMY3 data.

The precipitation value in the EPW version of the file seems to be the "Pwat" or "Precipitable Water", which is defined in the TMY3 user's manual as "The total precipitable water contained in a column of unit cross section extending from the earth's surface to the top of the atmosphere." How is this used, or can this be used in E+? How can we translate this to information about rainfall? There is a column for Liquid Precipitation Depth in the TMY3 (mostly no data -9900, but...), wouldn't this be more useful for, as discussed, green roof calcs, etc? Is there a plan to translate Pwat to chance of liquip precip?

Thanks. Nice to see all the new stations.

Last week NREL released a new TMY3 weather data set for 1020 US
locations. These completely update and replace all of the locations in
the older TMY2 data set.

All 1020 TMY3 files are available on the EnergyPlus web site:

http://www.eere.energy.gov/buildings/energyplus/cfm/weather_data.cfm <http://www.eere.energy.gov/buildings/energyplus/cfm/weather_data.cfm>

(Look under North and Central America or Southwest Pacific.)
