Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] Energy simulation fee

In addition to Edwin's suggestion, you could also use the building energy simulation software, DesignBuilder. I used this program for my thesis work and it was adequate in modeling the facility I was doing an energy audit on. It is compatible with EnergyPlus meaning that you can export files from DesignBuilder into EnergyPlus and make modifications/additions to your existing model. I mainly used DesignBuilder to draw the facility and specify building loads on it because it is not easy in EnergyPlus (especially if you are new to building energy simulation). There is also a CFD tool that DesignBuilder is implementing to be released soon. I suggest DesignBuilder because I've used it, though I'm sure that the other programs eQuest, Energy10, etc. would work just as well (though I haven't personally used them). Aside from DesignBuilder, there are also other programs that let you draw the faciltiy and export the file to EnergyPlus. Hope this helps.

For Fluent, there are a number of tutorials on the web, one is: http://instruct1. cit.cornell. edu/courses/ fluent/ .  For E+, there are a number of documents that come with E+, including the GettingStarted manual.  That should help if you are completely new to the programs.

Hi Shariq,

I am a new PhD student in Building Science at Virginia Tech. I have
just started taking a course in building simulation that, according to
the syllabus, would go over Energy10, eQuest and DOE2. I am concerned
that I may not be learning the up-to-date material in this course. I
am interested in research on 'natural ventilation' (as this is most
appropriate in the hot-humid climate context of Bangladesh where I
come from) and programs like Energy Plus and CFD packages like Fluent
may be programs I need to start learning.

As you seem to have a good background on building simulation please
advise how I should go about educating myself on this area (there are
no courses on E+ or Fluent at VT)
