RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] Re: 64 bit Windows 7

Now I wish I bought the quad core! Gave it a miss in favour of the 8GB ram L

Can you describe how to implement this because computation time is a big issue because I always forget what I changed for the last simulation because I end up doing other things.

Actually, one solution for parallel processors that is relatively easy to implement is to split the simulation period into number of processors and do periods simultaneously.  For example, for quad core machine, do 1/1 to 3/31 on the 1st, 4/1 to 6/30 on the 2nd, 7/1 to 9/30 on the 3rd and 10/1/to 12/31 on the fourth processor.

We tested this option without any overlap (i.e., to increase accuracy one can start few days earlier each period) and the results were functionally identical with the run that was done in sequence on one processor.  The running time was 4 times shorter using parallel processors, though.

This is implementable on the level of user interface and can be nicely scaled to the number of available processors, so we don’t necessarily need E+ team to provide this option, but it would surely be nice thing ;-)

There are many factors in software utilizing more resources in computing. EnergyPlus simulation processes may never be adapted to parallel processing -- the simulation process don't necessarily lend itself to advantage of parallel processors.

EnergyPlus must be taking as much memory as it needs. The memory it needs depends on the number of zones, surfaces, etc.

Any chance of this being rectified in the near future as the E+ computation is obviously crying out for more ram. Mine ticks along at 30% while the processor is busting out at 100%
