Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] PMV Calculation details

Hi Linda,

Thanks for the quick response. I have not changed the activity schedule within EnergyPlus to reflect slower metabolic rate. I cant do it because the metabolic rate has to be modified based on the PMV values. Thats the reason I decided to do this exercise outside Eplus. For now, the activity schedule is very simple, with a value of 108 W/person, during all occupied hours (120 W/person multiplied by metabolic factor of 0.9, for light office work). From this I get the metabolic rate of 60 W/m2 (108/1.8) which is what I am using for PMV calculations.

I am using v4. I did go through the documentation for v5 but found it was same as that for v4 (for the Fanger model).

Have you changed the activity schedule to reflect ths slower met rate?  Are you using V5?  The documentation added some more explanation,  I think.

And maybe you should be basing your calcs on a detailed output rather than hourly.  Hourly may average some of the variables.  -- include the schedule values in your outputs as well.

I am trying to understand how EnergyPlus calculates PMV. I have been going through the documentation (energineering reference)but I think there are a few gaps - I could be wrong considering I have a very limited understanding of this subject. I was trying to do a PMV manual calculation in excel, using the algorithm given in the documentation, and was expecting values close to those in the simulation output. But the deviation is too huge to be ignored. I really need to do this because I have to modify the hourly PMV values based on reduction of metabolic rate (as a result of slowing down of activity levels by the occupants) in a warm-humid climate. So, basically, what I need is the correlation between metabolic rate and PMV.
