Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] wondering if EnergyPlus is usable for single house projects

I have also used eQuest, Trace and REM/Rate (one of the HERS modeling software packages).  eQuest is definitely much easier to learn, but has more limitations in what it can model.  If you are interested in modeling complex HVAC systems or passive design strategies that include high thermal mass, you'll do better with EnergyPlus.

Trace is expensive and did not serve any of my needs well.  Rem/Rate is simple and easy to learn, and has many of the pull-down menus you mention, but you need to be a HERS (US Home Energy Efficiency Rater) in order to have access to the software.  Worse, energy analysis for the software is based on heating degree days and cooling degree days and offers very limited output reports.

EPlus can do all you quoted in your email below.

Whether you can use it or not depends on how much time you need to learn it, and your back ground knowledge on HVAC and programming.

I use EPlus to design and evaluate heating of houses in Malaysia and Singapore without using air conditioning.  To me retrofit a building is to use external shading, ventilation, etc.
and not by using window air-con units, etc.

My other reply was written before I saw your original mail.

Subject: [EnergyPlus_Support] wondering if EnergyPlus is usable for single house projects

Hello,

I am a beginer of EnergyPlus and wondering if I can use EnergyPlus for a single family detached house without having much problems.

crawl space, wooden frame structure, huge infiltration, individual A/C heat pump units, non-US weather condition

these are features I am thinking to deal with for retrofit projects.

I would appreciate your recommendation and suggestion whether I should go with E+ or not.

Thank you very much,
