RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] Re: Elevator and Escalator Energy Consumption and Heat Gain

On the elevator and escalators, It is common for an elevator in Singapore on every third floor.  User can walk up and down one storey.  People on wheel chairs can have priority to rent or own a government house at the elevitor level.

Escalators on a low usage area are load activatd.  One step on it and it moves.  Linear motor would make such escalator last longer with maintenance.

There many things we can do to save energy.

Un-necessary simulation are also energy wasting.  I do not think users are addressing this issue.

I did mention once that the flash player is disabled on my PC, so that auto load of videos cannot happen.  This is also the reason why I do not want to have high speed connection.
Without a high speed connection, the vendors are not interested in sending me pop ups.  That is also energy saving.
======================
Because schedules and others are not really represent real usage, too many simulation using them is also not required and energy wasting.

The time table of a school is not same every year, the number of students are also not constant from year to year.  With natural ventilation, student themselves controls the windows and shades.  I wanted to promote more people power and less automation power.

People power make people aware of the importance of energy saving and be more healthy.

================
Place the printer in a room like a kitchen stove.  Have the heat vented out with hidden ducts, in Summer and circulate the heat back into the room in Winter.  The laser usually would go to sleep by itself to save power.

X-Ray machine at the dentist office do not use much power.  The larger therapy machines are in a special room and need not be simulated with an annual schedule.
==================
Cell phones and hands free phones are also energy wasting and may have radiation hazards to the user.  The wireless base stations are turned on all the time, even when there is no call  traffic.  10 to 40w per unit in a 400 unit condo add up to quite a large consumption.  I have not seen any one adding this to the EPlus simulation yet.

I still have wire line telephone in my house, and I refused to switch to so called "Home phone" which require an adapter to operate and charge the base station and heansets.  It is supose to save money, but the service provided does not pay for the electricity bill, battery replacement and equipment replacement.  The wire line telephones do not consume any energy at the user end, when not in use.  The talk power is applied at the telephone exchange end.  The talking current is also the signalling current modulated by the carbon microphone.

There is new condo building, which is LEED certified, and the management  refused to allow land line telephone to be installed, because they have sign an exclusive contrat wit
These are all good questions, and if anyone has written a good text book on energy modeling in buildings, I would love to buy it. Now for answers:

The true accuracy of energy modelling is deturmined by the accuracy of the assumptions that have the biggest impact on energy usage.

Typically these are people, lighting and ventilation air conditioning. As lighting and ventilation are dependant on the assumed people usage, it is clear that people is the most important assumption. Unfortunately, hourly people numbers is often the biggest guess.

Elevators are required by ASHRAE 90.1, but I've looked into standby and usage losses of elevators. It does not significantly effect energy usage, but elevator lights should be considered. The new ASHRAE standard 90.1 requires auto off lighting for unoccupied elevators. X-Ray machines should be included. Ask Dr. Li, he has worked with X-Ray.
Don't forget printer rooms. A printer puts out up to 2000W when it's running. Transformer, switchboard and electrical rooms take up loads of cooling power. Also the baggage moving system of the new BBI Airport in Berlin uses about 2.2 MW of power and is considered 80% on, so don't forget the baggage moving system.

I believe there is a standard that requires a glass facad in airports. The type of glass here will have a large impact. The type of lighting and lighting control. Are your lights recessed?
