The EPlus error message was correct. Joe did not have the fatal error after adding the autosizing in the fields. DesignData Joe used were 17.8 dry bulb, 17.8 delta, 6.7 wetbulb, with no sun during the day. He still think that he can force a computer program to use any values he wanted. Garbage in and garbage out. The actual .ddy values for LA International were 5, 0, 5, and CZ15RV2 was 2,0,2. for the 0.4% range. Since Joe is a weather expert, he should know the reason why his data was wrong, and still arguing below. He is supposed to be a statistician, if he is the Huang in ZhangHuang method used in the DesignDay object. It is not the values, it is the format and condition that the computer program wants is important. EPlus has already allow user to use the weather data for sizing. What is he complaining about. Joe used the wrong object format. There are many user use the DesignDay simulation for different research applications such as nataral air-flow building with no air-conditioning in Summer. Wetbulb is not the last field of the DesignDay object. Joe's building do not have shades, etc. Therefore to him, wind velocity, diffused solar, solar angle, etc. will never be used. I got this idea about autosizing straight from the *.err file. When I ran the file with an input Rated Total Cooling Capacity, I got this result. For those who are familiar with these CZXXRV weather files, they are semi-synthetic files not tied to any particular location, so I would challenge anyone to show that they can derive better Design Day criteria simply because long-term weather data do not exist! If you don't like the values, i.e., you think it's too high, the daily swing too large, there shouldn't be any solar (NOT what I did), etc., shouldn't the autosizing just return what you would consider an incorrect cooling capacity? Instead ,it's giving an exiting air temperature of -74 F and no solution at all, Shouldn't the EnergyPlus Team be a little concerned why this can happen ? Back on the topic of design days versus typical year weather data, I've done comparisons of the peak temperatures between the two and found them to be very close at the lower criteria (2.5%, 1%, etc.), and diverging by a few degrees even at the top criteria (0.4%, 99.6%). This might raise some hackles, but I think the fundamental reason why we distinguish between the two approaches is simply tradition. The reason I also say that design days have been somewhat mystified is that the only number with solid statistical backing is the peak (or valley) dry bulb temperature. All the other stuff (diurnal temp swing, wind speed, wet-bulb profile, solar conditions, etc.) are largely judgement calls.
