In principle, I agree with you. Use the idealloads option untill you know what hvac is going into your building. I've never really utilized the templates so I can't comment.
If you just want to night ventilate independant of all the other things, the ventilation objects such as the infiltration objects, simple ventilation, etc. are mostly stand alone unless you need to include heating or cooling systems, but plain vent is easy enough. just one block of code and a schedule.
