You can simulate A/C components in external programs and provide the necessary inputs to E+ (for example heat input rate to zone). Take a look at BCVTB (https://simulationresearch.lbl.gov/bcvtb). It has an example in which an entire VAV system is implemented outside of E+.
If you use Matlab to implement controllers and other components, you may consider using MLE+ (http://www.seas.upenn.edu/~nghiem/mleplus.html). Disclosure: I'm the developer of MLE+.
I am not aware of any software to connect MapleSim to E+. Although BCVTB supports Modelica (I believe it's the language behind MapleSim), it only officially supports Dymola.
