I do not think it is necessary to up-date those ref. building files. Hardly anybody uses all of them. The set in the EPlus exampleFiles folder is good enough for most. New OpenStudio has another set in their release. The building models do not have the best energy saving features, to minimize the use of HVAC.. Dr. Li

Conversion from one EnergyPlus version to another is one
thing. Updating (i.e. correcting problems that may have been in the
files originally or taking advantage of other changes) is a different
story.
Conversion is simple. Updating is not.

Thanks Brent-
Actually I received a
call from someone at NREL who said that though it was not funded, someone
would do it on their time- basically he said that he was calling to let
me know someone was working on it-
The process of transitioning versions of the buildings library should not
be something each user has to do each time, rather if the models where
just updated once per year by one person it would be easier for everyone.
Thanks NREL- we look forward to the update:)

- Dear, Commercial reference building keepers at the national renewable
laboratory & keepers of the 90.1 Prototype models at the pacific
north west laboratories/USDOE building codes division.
-
- Could you do us modelers a favor>? Could you update the commercial
reference buildings from their current version 5 to version 7.1? And the
90.1 prototype building models from version 6 to version 7.1?
-
- The Energy Plus helpdesk site>Downloads>Converting older
versions files>Download zip file>Create text file using Ep launch
to select all files>convert to V6> Convert to V7 process is
cumbersome and makes the idea of using these files feel like work in its
self. The current version updater that comes packed with Energy Plus 7.1
will not convert from version 5 to 7.1 so the downloading of items is
just a bit confusing/time consuming and is a deterrent for users to get
started... One of the best uses of these reference buildings is to for
new Energy Plus users to be able to use and experiment with, but new
users may not find the transition process to be user friendly.
-
- The use of the reference buildings, and the prototype baseline
buildings found at the links below should be a easy to use asset, but
because they are not updated in unison with Energy Plus they are not
being put to use as they would be if they where maintained.

- The subject of these models has came up several times this year on
the Energy Plus support forum, so I have taken it upon my self to send
this formal request on the behalf of the Energy Plus modeling community
to request that the files are updated to version 7.1 and re-updated when
each release of Energy Plus is issued.
-
- Thank you

When I select one of the commercial reference buildings in the
"IDFVersionUpdater" it provides the error message:
"No approriate TransitionV-x-x-to-V-x-x.exe files found. They
may need to be downloaded from
http://www.energyplus.gov
click on Add-Ons and look for the link to download the Transition
programs."
However, no upgrade to the utility can be found on the EnergyPlus
website.
