Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] E+ performance on Windows 7 64 bit much worse than in XP 32 bit

Right, the original is a standard dual core.  The i5 supports hyper-threading, which makes it appear, to the OS, that there are actually 4 cores.  (Quad-core i7s appear to have 8 CPUs)

Either way, the eio shows that E+ was run on 2 threads concurrently in one and 4 concurrently in the other, which certainly explains the difference.

I can't remember now, but maybe you can actually set the number of cores you want to use.  If so, try setting them both to 1, and you should have a much more fair comparison of each actual E+ simulation run.

Thanks for your input.

I went to the Intel web site and no, both machines are dual core. However, the newer (i5, XP) supports 4 threads, whereas the older machine supports only 2 threads.

Cheers.

Homero.

I think, in your case, it is the number of cpu core you have. It seems that the computational time doubled when you switched from a quad-core i5 machine to a dual-core one.

As all things in .eio files, there is a header that explains the data lines:

! <Program Control Information:Threads/Parallel Sims>, Threading Supported,Maximum Number of Threads, Env Set Threads (OMP_NUM_THREADS), EP Env Set Threads (EP_OMP_NUM_THREADS). IDF Set Threads, Number of Threads Used (Interior Radiant Exchange), Number NominalSurface, Number Parallel Sims

What is the meaning of the fours versus the twos in the first column?
Anything I could do to improve EnergyPlus performance under Win7?

Thanks,
Homero.
