No, the shading objects are not associated with the window.  I’m considering something like an adjacent building that slowly cast a shadow across the surface as the day progresses.

Am not quite sure what you are asking.

Do you have the shading object over the single window?  And then windows have multipliers?

Assuming that you don't have different widths of shading objects, I believe the combination should work okay (you don't need multipliers on the shading objects).  Of course, it won't shade the exterior facade as it might in a more detailed model but I also don't think that should be significant for many buildings.
