I support Jason's efforts for a simple interface. One change I'd suggest is not have the simple interface do the error checking. Let EnergyPlus do the node connection/error checking. This will greatly simplify programming for the interface. 

The I/O reference gives us a schematic that I imagine what the interface could look like (not sure if the image below will show, also attached):
