There may be other ways to reduce run time without sacrificing too much accuracy.
The work above was done for code compliance tools but could work for preliminary design as well.
Basically, you run a shortened run period (4 weeks instead of the full year) and get a quick answer when doing trade-offs. Then, when you are satisfied with your final design, you run the annual simulation.
It works pretty well. Of course there are limitations, such as short variations in weather that may or may not get captured.
