Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] FullInteriorandExterior working with non-convex zones???

In a convex zone, all the surfaces can "see" all the other surfaces including the external window. My understanding is that if you use the algorithm with a non-convex zone, the surfaces "around the corner" will still be able to exchange radiation with all the other surfaces except those "facing" the other way.

As for direct solar incident on the internal surface "around the corner", the same applies, so you might somewhat double count some portions of the window transmitted direct beam...however in practice most of it falls on the floor during times of high W/m2, so having 30 W/m2 more for 2 hours during the day during the year is probably within the other error limits of our "simulation universe".

It really is highly dependant on zone geo.

IMO.

Thanks Jean, you are right, only Severe errors show up, not fatal.

I have been struggling with source code till I think I have understood how it is working. Actually the zones can be non-convex... I think it should be explained differently in the Manual since the error takes place when any surface from the zone is shadowing an external window. In a L shaped zone, the error only happens when the window is in one of the L shape internal surfaces. So if you have window in the external surfaces (which are not shadowed by any other surface from the zone), there is no error although the zone is not convex.

My final doubt is that if the zone is not convex, although the error was not shown (because of what I have explained before), the calculation is right or not. The fact that E+ is not giving an error may not say that the calculation is right (because according to the manual the zone is not convex, and it should be).

Partially solved...

Germán.

From my experience, the simulation carries on, however fatals do occure if you use other objects that may not be used with fullexteriorandinterior, for example Material:IRTransparent.

I am sorry Jean, but I don't really understand your explanation. According to E+ manuals if the zones are non-convex the algorithm does not work and E+ throws a severe/fatal error. However in the test I sent I have several non-convex zones and the simulation ends without errors. Are there other conditions that I am not aware of? (I don't understand what you mean by interzonal clipping).
