RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] Thermal capacity of walls

Another option is to use the EE4 energy modeling software from Natural Resources Canada. This tool is for compliance energy modeling based on the MNECB 1997. You wouldn’t want to use it for energy modeling but it has a neat facility for defining envelope assemblies. It has a good library of materials and you can add other materials. You build up the construction layers by picking the appropriate materials. Once your construction is defined, the Heat Capacity is calculated and reported. You get to choose SI or Imperial units. The Assembly construction facility also calculates the thermal bridging effects of metal studs, etc. so you arrive at a reasonable effective R-value. It is very helpful when you need to determine if a wall is Mass type or not for 90.1 purposes.

Yes the program can output some metrics, however, the key is getting the inputs correct- for that I use the spreadsheet sent.

Hi Leticia and Ivan, Good Day!

In my last simulations I am getting used to consider the values by report called Output: Variable, Surface Group: Surface Heat Storage Energy.

As below:

! Program Version - EnergyPlus

 Version 8.4.0-832e4bb9cb

YMD=2016.04.05 16:53

! Output:Variable Objects

IDD_Version 8.4.0

Output:Variable

Surface Heat Storage Energy

hourly

Output:Variable

Surface Heat Storage Gain Rate

hourly

Output:Variable

Surface Heat Storage Loss Rate

hourly

Output:Variable

Surface Heat Storage Rate

hourly

Output:Variable

Surface Heat Storage Rate per Area

hourly

Output:Variable

Surface Average Face Conduction Heat Gain Rate

hourly

Output:Variable

Surface Average Face Conduction Heat Loss Rate

hourly

Output:Variable

Surface Average Face Conduction Heat Transfer Energy

hourly

Output:Variable

Surface Average Face Conduction Heat Transfer Rate

I do not know another report or group to get it;

Leticia,

i've checked here too and I do not find this output.

You may need to request the outputs to calculate the thermal capacity. I believe that the software does not have this specific output.

Now i'm curious about this too.

Hi, Ivan.

I already checked and it I didn't find it. Do you know the specific name of the output?

Regards,

Leticia

Hello Leticia,

check these itens:

- Output:Table:SummaryReports

- Output:Variable

Maybe variables have the output that you need.

Hello,

I need to calculate the thermal capacity of the walls of my model (kJ/m²K). How can I ask for this output in EnergyPlus? The table shows me only the thermal transmittance (U value).

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Leticia Neves
