[EnergyPlus_Support] Re: CFD

Just to add to Jim’s comment, the DesignBuilder model can take simulation results as an output from EnergyPlus (at a selected date/time) and feed them directly into the CFD engine as boundary (starting) conditions for the CFD calculation. You should find tutorials on this on the DesignBuilder website.

I hope that helps,

Greetings,
Can I use EnergyPlus in CFD simulation as a stand alone program without using Designbuilder.
Thank you very much

No. EnergyPlus is an energy analysis program and has no CFD capabilities.

DesignBuilder makes CFD easier for you because it makes use of the geometry
and other information that you've already entered - that's a nice advantage
of the DB GUI. there may be a CFD package which can read E+ geometry, but
I'm unaware of it.

Choice. It is perhaps the most distinct and dignifying characteristic
of humans. Consciously and with understanding, we choose what is true,
honorable, right, pure, lovely … or otherwise. Like the rest of
humanity, my choices don’t always align with true, honorable, right,
pure, and lovely, but I know those are what I set my sights upon. I
choose them.

Rasha,

The answer probably depends on what you want to do. I know there is a CFD component to Designbuilder, but I am uncertain exactly how it is linked (if at all) to EnergyPlus. I assume you want E+ to either provide input to CFD or CFD to provide input to E+. So E+ actually can run outside Designbuilder. Designbuilder just generates code for geometry and mechanical systems and desired outputs before it runs the E+ simulation.

You will have to do a lot of coding if you want to link a CFD run to a running E+ simulation, but I believe there are ways to do it.

ODS Studio has code to generate E+ geometry in Blender and link that to OpenFoam CFD. However, the sharing part is to develop pressure coefficients in a Virtual Wind Tunnel for AirFlowNetwork simulations in E+. There is no runtime data exchange.
