Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] Help with combination of AFN-EMS-Ideal Loads-Hybrid Ventilation

Dear Javed,

The availability manager works fine, but the problem is that the windows in airflow network work with an opening modulation, and I wanted it to work only as a binary control (on/off). That's why I'm trying to use the EMS together with the availabitity manager. The problem is that I couldn't find a component and control types on the actuator, in order to set up a system that overrides the modulation of openings but still allows the availability manager to work with the hybrid ventilation.
If you have any specific information on that, I would very much appreciate.

Thank you,
Leticia Neves

Dear Neves,

I forget to mention that if you go ahead with "AvailabilityManager:HybridVentilation" object then you might need to change your modeling approach. So there are two approach (which i am aware of) to model mixed mode cooling/heating and ventilation strategies:
  • EMS control - prior to AvailabilityManager:HybridVentilation object introduced in E+ (released with v7., if i remember correctly), the EMS was one of the ways to override simulation controls. Sometimes it is challenging too!
  • AvailabilityManager:HybridVentilation: relatively simple and easy to implement.  It serves two purposes:
    • 1) prevents simultaneous natural ventilation and HVAC system operation,
    • 2) allows users to examine various ventilation strategies to maximize natural ventilation in order to reduce heating/cooling loads.
It seems like you are trying to avoid running Natural ventilation OR mechanical cooling/Heating simultaneously. Based on option/schedule chosen under "Ventilation Control Mode Schedule Name" different control strategies (0-7 based on control parameter like ASHRAE 55, CO2 etc.)  could be implemented to control hybrid ventilation.

Hope this helps!!

Hi, Javed.
Thank you for your answer. I'd already looked, but the problem seems to be on the EMS. Couldn't find a way to fix it.
If you have any specific recommendations, please send it to me.

You should look into AvailabilityManager:HybridVentilation object under I/O reference guide. This could answer most of your concerns.

Dear all,

I'm dealing with EMS and hybrid ventilation and I'm having some trouble. I wonder if someone could help me.
I was successful on using EMS to override the modulation of
window opening area in order to have a binary control (on/off). But I settled the EMS to control openings through indoor air temperature and occupancy, so when I added the ideal loads system the HVAC started working together with opened windows. I couldn't find a way to override this. Could someone help me? Attached is my EP model.
Another question that I have: I tried to use EMS + Hybrid ventilation using a regular split system (instead of ideal loads) but the EMS stops working and the windows start the modulation again. Did someone try this option?

I'd appreciate any help anyone could give me.
