[Equest-users] U values for fenestrations

Hi Ali,

I would suggest using WINDOW6 as Nikola suggests. You can vary the size of the window there to match the actual sizes and see what the U-value will be for the window assembly (glass+frame).

In WINDOW6 you can create a "DOE-2 Report" file that has the glass information. This can be imported into eQUEST. Be sure to define your frame-type and frame-width in eQUEST as I don't believe that it will import the frame data from your WINDOW6 report file.

There are other ways to input single U- and SHGC-values for windows, but my understanding is they don't contain the details of angular-dependent transmittance which is important to include.

You should be able to edit the frame conductance in the "Window Properties" Screen in the Detailed Edit mode (below)

Regarding your last question about a variety of window sizes - you can create 3 windows in the Wizard mode, and they can be the same glass type of different sizes. If you have more than that, you will need to edit the windows by hand in the detailed mode. I find it easiest to create the correct # of windows first, and then manipulate them to the size I want (rather than creating new window objects in the detailed mode).

Let us know how you do!

Kind regards,

Alex Krickx

Hi Ali,

You may want to check the Windows 6 program from LBNL on the following link and play with the windows and framing for your checks.

Subject: [Equest-users] U values for fenestrations

Dear all,

I am trying to understand the best way to enter the U value of my

fenestrations as a whole system. The manufacturer specified the U value

of the glazing as 0.49 BTU/hr·ft2°F and the aluminium framing as 0.70

BTU/hr·ft2°F. I do not have the NFRC data of my fenestration.

I can enter the properties of the glazing however I couldn't find a way

to define the thermal properties of the aluminium framing. I have also

checked the detailed mode screens.

The dimensions of the fenestration varies in different locations. So

what is the best way to calculate and enter the U-factor for the overall

fenestration area (including glazing and framing)?

My aim is making my simulation as accurate as possible since I want to

compare the results with actual values.

Thanks in advance.

Ali
