RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] open idf fiel with excel

Thanks Dru for your information on the option in IDF Editor to preserve the order of objects in the file after editing.
The other thing I would like to learn is to use the E+ macro file.

Something like the 'include' in C programming, or 'using' in Pascal, so that I can keep the .idf file in sections, such as constructions, materials, schedules types, etc. Most of these does not change while experimenting with a design.

At present, I keep the working sections in separate files and use a batch file to join them together before a simulation.

I have not managed to find the E+ document which explains the E+ Macro file usuage.

There is an option in IDF Editor to preserve the order of objects inyour IDF (new in V 2.1).Go to File, Save Options. There you can specify the Saved Order ofObjects as 'Original with New' at top or bottom or 'Sorted'. 'Sorted'is the way it used to work. 'Original with New ...' preserves the orderof your IDF as it is read it--it adds new objects at the top or bottomas you specify.________________________________From: EnergyPlus_Support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx[mailto:EnergyPlus_Support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Yuen LiSent: Thursday, March 06, 2008 7:45 PMTo: energyplus_support@yahoogroups.comSubject: RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] open idf fiel with excelI agree with your suggestion, Linda. Even with Wordpad you need to makesure that the file is saved back in 'plain text' format. The Wordpad does not recognise the extension .idf. Therefore, you mustspecify the format after making any changes. If you use Wordpad only to print the .idf file, make sure you do notsave the file after printing, when asked by the PC.I do not trust the IDFEditor 100% also. It is too smart sometimes, byremoving or changing some listing order of the items.Keep a back up file, before doing any changes.Dr. Li. The format of the IDFfiles is precise and Excel may not preserve the fields properly. UseWordpad if you don't have another editor. You could also look into usingEPMacro that comes with EnergyPlus if you are parameterizing singlevalues. At 02:30 AM 3/6/2008, houcem mechri wrote:> I met some problemsin modifying idf file using Excel.
