RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] Re: Glass Overhang Optical Properties

Dear E+ support,

Just need your confirmation if this will work.

To model a window overhang made of spectrally-selective glass with 0.7 visible transmittance and 0.3 solar transmittance, I use the Shading:Building:Detailed object to represent this overhang instead of Shading:OverhangI specify a Transmittance Schedule of ON (always at 100%).

Then I use ShadingProperty:Reflectance for this overhang and define Fraction of Shading Surface That Is Glazed to be 1.0  to specify that this shading surface is all glass.  I then define Glazing Construction Name to be the particular spectrally-selective glass that I meant to use for this overhang.

Will this work for my purpose of reducing solar heat gain while attaining sufficient daylighting thru this glass overhang?

Thanks for your support!

Jun

Thanks again for the reply Linda,

We have exterior shading fins, but the value of solar and visible transmittance are different.  Maybe we can have an E+ object for these fins similar to the transmittance data of glazing for windows -  having different transmittance for solar and visible.

Thanks!

Jun

The overhang and fin features can already have reduced transmittance -- they work to reduce or increase (from opaque) solar heat gain onto the facade.  They are not interior features (which is what I thought you wanted).

One just uses a transmittance schedule (can be seasonal) for them.

It is possible then to have an overhang or a shading feature with distinct solar and visible transmittance in future releases of EnergyPlus?   Say, place this in the feature request list….  We have had several building projects with tinted glass shading fins and I am very interested to know its effect on reducing solar heat gain and auto-daylighting.
